Capital Expenditure

Capex

Cash spent to maintain or grow the asset base

Definition

Capex is cash used to buy or upgrade long-lived assets: factories, equipment, data centers. FMP reports the cash-flow line as a signed number: Apple's is typically negative because it is an outflow. BullBrief shows that statement figure rather than inventing a positive spend.

Cash paid for property, plant, and equipment (cash-flow statement)

Example

If operating cash flow is $111B and capex is −$13B, free cash flow is about $98B.

Typical range

Software: low vs. revenue; industrials and semiconductors: much higher
