Market Cap

The total dollar value the market puts on a company

Definition

Market capitalization is simply the total market value of all a company's outstanding shares. It represents what it would cost to buy the entire company at the current share price. Companies are often classified by size: Mega-cap ($200B+), Large-cap ($10B-$200B), Mid-cap ($2B-$10B), Small-cap ($300M-$2B), and Micro-cap (< $300M).

Share Price × Total Shares Outstanding

Example

Apple at $200/share with 15.4B shares outstanding → Market Cap = $3.08 trillion. It would cost roughly $3 trillion to acquire all of Apple at today's price.

Typical range

S&P 500 minimum is roughly $15B market cap
